Joel V Barr, 23, son of Mr. and Mrs. H. Ernest Barr, 321 East 1st, was killed early Wednesday afternoon when the car he was driving veered off US50 five miles west of Newton.
At the approach to the bridge over Emma Creek, Barr's westbound car left the highway, smashed through the guard rail on the north side of the pavement, and fell into the creek bed 30 feet below road level.
Harvey County Sheriff Norman Walker said the car flew approximately 100 feet before impact. The car came to rest on its side against the west embankment of the creek.
Walker said driving conditions were normal, with clean, dry pavement. He estimated the car's speed at 65 to 70 miles per hour. No cause for the wreck was determined, he said.
The car's front end and top were caved in, Walker said, and a gasoline-powered saw was required to remove Barr's body from the wreck. He was declared dead at the scene.
Barr, a native of Dodge City, was graduated from Hutchinson High School in 1967, where he was nominated for a Kansas State University Putnam Scholarship. He attended the University of Kansas three year.
