Joseph "Joe" Garcia, 83, a resident of Elkton, passed away at his home on Dec. 15, 2011, surrounded by his loving family.
He was born in Palmerton, Pa., on July 3, 1928, to the late Joseph Garcia Lopez and Nativdad Alvarez Garcia. His family returned to Spain when he was 3, where he was raised in the village of Aviles, Asturias.
Joe returned to the U.S. at the age of 19 and served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. After serving his country, he worked in Washington, D.C., for Western Electric, where he met his wife of 58 years, Rachel. They were married on Aug. 29, 1953. He later worked for many years in Northern Virginia in the electronics industry. He moved to the Eastern Shore in 1972 and retired from Perdue Farms as a plant superintendent in 1992. Joe was an honorable, dignified man, who realized that riches did not mean money or possessions. He loved the Lord, working in his garden, and most of all loved his family and taking care of them. He will be missed by his family every day, but we are grateful that he can now be at peace.
He is survived by his wife, Rachel Hill Garcia, and their four children, Solita Garcia and her partner, Steve Kidd, of Waynesville, N.C., Joseph Garcia and his wife, Pepse M. Garcia, of Roanoke, Va., Ramona Garcia Davis and her husband, Douglas Davis, of Elkton, Va., and Rene Garcia-Kesecker and her husband, John Kesecker, of Berkeley Springs, W.Va. He was a beloved "Pop-Pop" to his six grandchildren, Jordan Garcia, Mikaela Davis, Brittany Davis, Nativa Kesecker, Rachael Kesecker and Naomi Kesecker. He is survived by his younger sisters, Meury Blanco and Solita Suarez, of Spain. He will also be fondly remembered as "Uncle Joe" to his many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his elder sisters, Rose Garcia and Feni Garcia.
A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 20, 2011, in the chapel of the Kyger Funeral Home in Elkton. Entombment will follow at Eastlawn Memorial Gardens in Harrisonburg.
