Garfield Randolph Freeze, Sr., 84, of Elkton, passed away peacefully on Saturday November 5, 2011 at his beloved farmhouse, located at 8192 Freeze Farm Lane, Elkton, VA.
Mr. Freeze was born on August 13, 1927, in Stanley, and was a son of the late Luther Edward Freeze and Nellie Higgs Freeze.
He attended Battle Creek School and Stanley High School. He was drafted into the Army in 1945, and served as a Corporal with the Army/Fir Force from 1945-1946.
He was owner of Freeze Farms in Elkton, and was an active farmer until his recent illness. He was also co-owner of F&S Auction in New Market, and was a very successful auctioneer. Mr. Freeze had a missionary spirit and the gift of hospitality. He often spoke at area Seventh Day Adventist Churches throughout Virginia and West Virginia. He enjoyed visiting nursing homes in the Page Valley area and spreading joy to others on a weekly basis. Mr. Freeze was an active member of Elkton Seventh Day Adventist Church, and in his later years he attended New Market Seventh Day Adventist Church.
Mr. Freeze is survived by his first wife, Helen L. Freeze, the mother of his children whom he married on April 2, 1955, and was united in marriage to Reita Taliaferro-Freeze on July 19, 1981, at Elkton Seventh Day Adventist Church.
In addition to his wife, Mr. Freeze is survived by three children, Sandra K. Collier and husband Tony of Shenandoah, Garfield Randolph Freeze, Jr. and wife Carla of Stanley and Rebecca F. Hensley and husband Jake of New Market; a brother, Wayne R. Freeze, Sr. and wife Lois of Stanley; five grandchildren, Tiffany F. Kite, Autumn Lucas, Nathan Walker, Taron Freeze and Christopher Freeze; four great-grandchildren, Trent and Taite Kite, Dakota Hensley and Allyssa Lucas; two step-children, Michele Young and James Horn, Jr.; three step-grandchildren, Joshua Young, Brandon and Jacob Horn; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Mr. Freeze was preceded in death by two sisters, Roena and Ruby Freeze.
The Freeze family will meet and receive friends at the home of Garfield Freeze, 8192 Freeze Farm Lane, Elkton.
Viewing will be on Wednesday from 4-6 p.m. at the New Market Seventh Day Adventist Church, immediately followed by a Celebration of Life service with Pastor Lawrence Saunders and Pastor Buz Menhardt officiating. The family will receive friends following the service. Everyone is invited to fellowship and enjoy light refreshments with the family.
A committal service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at East Lawn Memorial Gardens Mausoleum Chapel. Military rites will be conducted.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to 3 ABN, P.O. Box 220, West Frankfort, IL 62896; Hospice of RMH, 2010 Health Campus Dr., Harrisonburg, VA 22801 or to area nursing homes of the donor's choice.
