Fred Chaffin, 80, of Garden City, died Tuesday, Aug. 28, 2001, at Kearny County Hospital in Lakin.
He was born May 9, 1921, at Bolton, the son of Roy and Osa (Lindley) Chaffin. He grew up in Independence and attended school there until the family moved to Holcomb in the 1930s. His family then moved to Yates Center, where he graduated from high school in 1939. He attended Independence Junior College where he also played football.
On July 5,1942, he married Cleo Foote at Yates Center
Mr Chaffin served in the U.S. Army during World War II from 1942 to 1946, serving as a medical technician, first at O'Riley General Hospital and later in Brazil.
After the service, he graduated with a bachelor's degree from Southwest Missouri State. He then started teaching and coaching football basketball and track in Palco, Atchison and Stafford, and taught in Garden City from 1958 to 1961. During the summer months, he took classes and received a master's degree in administrative education from the University of Missouri.
After his retirement from teaching in 1961, he maintained his love for football and track by working as a referee and track starter. He also sold life insurance in southwest Kansas and later worked as a warehouse supervisor at Machine Supply in Garden City for several years.
Mr Chaffin was a member of First Baptist Church where he served as a deacon, helped start the bus program and served as a Sunday School teacher for many years. He also belonged to American Baptist Men, Senior Center of Finney County and the Ambassador Singers.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by two daughters, Connie McAfee, Garden City, and Cathy Rice, Paradise, Texas; a 'sister, Marguerite Van Dolah, Cheyenne, Wyo.; a grandson; and two granddaughters. He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother and a sister
Memorial service will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at First Baptist Church, Garden City. Carley Hazelton, pastor, will officiate. A private family committal service will take place later
There will be no visitation. Memorials are suggested to Camp Christy at Scott Park or the High Plains Retirement Village Special Care Unit, both in care of Garnand Funeral Home, 412 N. Seventh St.
