ARMSTRONG, John Calloway - Died, at the home of his sister, Mrs. Nancy Smith, on Monday, September 16, 1895 at 1 o'clock p.m. John CallowayArmstrong, aged 77 years, after a lingering illness. John Calloway Armstrong was born in Knoxville, Tenn. on May 10,1818. He received a good education for those early days and was a teacher and surveyor by profession. He organized several schools during his earlier life and among other work assisted his brother in surveying the town of Eureka Springs in this state. On September 12, 1839 he was united in marriage to Miss Nancy Weir in McMinn county, Tenn. To this union were born three sons and three daughters of whom only two daughters, Mrs. Janet Willet of Kirkwood, Ill. and Mrs. Emma Selvey of Oto, Iowa survive. They left Tennessee about 47 years since and lived a short time at Independence, Mo. and then moved to Illinois, thence to Iowa. About five years ago, owing to the failing health and mind of his aged sister, Mrs. Nancy Smith, Mr. Armstrong came to Bentonville to devote his time to making happy the last years of her life. About three months since he was stricken with an incurable disease of the throat and although good medical treatment and careful nursing by his faithful, loving daughters and kind friends was given, it was known some time since that he could not recover and his peace was made with his heavenly Father and he was prepared to go, with only the regret that he could not take his aged and helpless sister with him on his last journey. The deceased lived an exemplary christian life, being a member of the Cumberland Presbyterian church for more than sixty years. Funeral services were conducted at the residence by Rev. Sullivan of the C.P. church, assisted by Revs. Boggs and Chariton, after which the remains were interred in the Odd Fellows cemetery beside those of his brother, brother-in-law and nephew. Mr. and Mrs. Ed Selvey of Pea Ridge, late of Iowa, came over Tuesday to attend the funeral of uncle John Armstrong. [Bentonville Sun 9/21/1895]
