Vance H. Dodson, Jr. died peacefully at the age of 89 on Tuesday December 20th at the Goodall Hospital in Sanford, Maine. Vance resided in Parsonsfield, Maine.Dr. Dodson was a technical consultant to the Construction Products Division of W.R. Grace & Co., Cambridge, MA. Over the past thirty years, Dr. Dodson has held a variety of positions with W.R. Grace, ranging from Research Manager to Senior Scientist. Prior to that, he taught chemistry at the University of Toledo for twelve years. Dr. Dodson was a member of the American Society for Testing and Materials, the American Ceramic Society, the American Concrete Institute, the American Chemical Society, and the Materials Research Society. The author of more than two dozen patents, he is also the author of numerous articles as well as two forthcoming titles, Fly Ash – To Be or Not To Be Used in Concrete and An Introduction to Portland Cement and It's Eccentricities, Idiosyncrasies and Anomalies. Dr. Dodson received his Ph.D. in inorganic chemistry from Purdue University.
Vance is survived by his wife Marilyn, his three children, Marc and wife Nancy, Thomas, and Julie and husband Floyd. He also has three grandchildren, Matthew, Eric, and Monica and was predeceased by a grandson Rory.
Private memorial services will be conducted at St. Anthony's Roman Catholic Church in Sanbornville, NH.
Donations in Vance's name may be made to any local Humane Society in your area. He worked for many years as a volunteer at our local Humane Society and in his retired years enjoyed the company of his own numerous cats.
Arrangements are under the direction of the Carll-Heald & Black Funeral Home, 580 Main Street, Springvale, Maine.
