Born to Frank W. Thring, Sr. (said to be the inventor of the clapperboard), Frank was a very busy character actor with a career that spanned over 35 years.

Among his most famous roles is Pontius Pilate in Ben-Hur (1959).

Frank died of cancer at age 68 and his ashes were scattered off the coast of Queenscliff, Victoria. A celebration of his life was held in Melbourne's Victorian Arts Centre in 1995.
