Elias Saddoris was born in Berlin, Holmes County, Ohio on July 25, 1827 His father, George Saddoris, was born in Germany January 22, 1778 and settled in Berlin prior to 1825. Elias married Eliza Melissa Root on May 4, 1853 in Ottawa County, Ohio. She was born Dec 14, 1835 in Huron County, Ohio
For many years Elias was a prominent agriculturist of Carroll township, both he and his wife being early settlers of Ottawa county.
On September 27, 1864 he was drafted for service in the war of the Rebellion, and was attached to Company H, Fifty-fifth O. V. I. The records of his unit show Elias would have been in the Occupation of Atlanta through November 15. His unit was part of Sherman's March to the sea from November 15-December 10.The Fifty-fifth was at the Siege of Savannah during December 1864. Elias died at Savannah, Georgia on February 28, 1865 from illness contracted while defending his country.
