William G. Cutler's History of the State of Kansas, RICE COUNTY, Part 7: "LEVI BRANCH, farmer and stock raiser, P. O. Chase, Section 24, Township 18, Range 10, Eureka Township. He came to this place July 16, 1877. Has 160 acres land, 100 of which is cultivated. In 1882 he raised 600 bushels wheat, an average of thirty bushels per acre, 1,100 bushels of corn, an average of twenty-two bushels per acre.

He was born in Meigs County, Ohio, January 3, 1843; family moved to Wayne County, Ill., 1853, where he was raised on a farm."

Enlisted January 1, 1864, Company M, Fifth Illinois Cavalry. {Descrip at enlistment: age 21 Ht 5 ft 10 in+, Hair dark, eyes hazel, complexion light, Occupation Farmer} Was taken prisoner in a skirmish near Collierville, Tenn., but paroled very soon; he participated in all actions of his command. (Injured at Vicksburg and Alexandria)

Mustered out 27th of October, 1865. He returned home and followed agricultural pursuits. Moved in 1876 to Mower County, Minn., farmed a year and came to Kansas. (1913 he received pension of $21.50 per month. Pension certificate number 501864 Member of GAR, WHL Wallace Post #55 Centrailia, Ill.)

"Married in 1864 to Miss Clarinda Phillips, of Monroe County, Ohio; they have one daughter - Ida E. Mr. Branch and wife are members of the Methodist Episcopal Church. He is a Greenbacker in politics."

Levi worked as a carpenter as well as farming. He was also Sheriff of Wayne County Illinois in 1873.

1913: Died age 70 of Bronchial tuberculosis at the home of his wife's sister, Malissa Jelly, in Jeffersonville IL.
Of six children born to Levi and Clarinda Branch, only one - Ida Elizabeth -- lived past infancy. Ida died age 24 of consumption. Levi and Clarinda "Katie" Branch took in his orphaned nephew Will Branch and helped raise him.

Levi's devoted wife Clarinda "Katie" lived another 20 years and is actually buried in Kansas. Their five infants are buried all in a row with identical tiny tombstones in Pleasant Grove Cemetery near Jeffersonville with Levi's father, Rev. Sam'l S Branch.

Levi's grave is midway to the back of this 65-acre cemetery, on the west side, 7th road north of office. His military gravestone is in front of the big marker, but leans forward on the ground. Cannot be read.
