The Hon. John C. Bestow was a charter member of the Chester, Meigs County, Ohio Masonic Lodge 71, issued in 1825. He was a candidate for sheriff of Meigs County in 1855, and apparently became a judge. "Joel Hull reminiscenses of Chester OH, page 80, ..The old Stedman hotel a large and pretentious building, was the residence of Judge J. C. Bestow and entertain the better class of travelers."

John C. Bestow had some hard luck with wives and children. He married first to Harriet Stedman in 1825; they had several infants who did not live and one son Levi Stedman Bestow, Harriet died in 1831 at age 27 and the son Levi died age 29 in 1855; Levi's two children, John's grandchildren, Harriet & Ernest died as infants.

His nephew and namesake, John C. Bestow born 1821 Mass, came at the age of 10 yrs., to live with his uncle. The boy's mother had died in Massachusetts.

John C, born 1797, married second to Melinda Ann Plummer in 1832 and they had two sons Joseph and Henry Bestow who changed their last name to Barstow and moved to Oregon. Joseph D Barstow married Emma C. Barr in Knox Co, Illinois in 1864. (info from direct descendant John Barstow of California in 2015, who also provided tombstone photos)

Melinda died in 1840 age 34; and Mr. Bestow married 3rd to Laura H. in 1841. She died in 1854 age 51.

John C. Bestow married 4th to Rhoda Frost Bissell who was born 1819 in Ohio. She died 1900 in Oregon.
