Beulah Betty Alexander, age 86, of Mattoon passed away at 3:30 a.m. on Sunday, September 15, 2013 at the Odd Fellow Rebekah Home in Mattoon.
Funeral Services honoring her life will begin at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday September 22, 2013 at Schilling Funeral Home, 1301 Charleston Avenue, Mattoon, IL with Reverend Dennis Strawn officiating. Burial will follow at Dodge Grove Cemetery in Mattoon, IL. Visitation for family and friends will be from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. on Saturday, September 21, 2013 at Schilling Funeral Home.
Betty was born on February 10, 1927 in rural Cumberland County, IL the daughter of Solomon Grover and Beulah (Plummer) Icenogle. She married Garland Eugene "Gene" Alexander on August 28, 1949 in Mattoon, IL.
Survivors include her loving husband of 64 years, Gene Alexander; five sons, Kent (Marilyn) Alexander of Ottawa, IL, Lincoln (Jody) Alexander of Mattoon, IL, Carson (Becky) Alexander of Round Hill, VA, Grant (Lori) Alexander of Shorewood, IL and Sherman Alexander of Russellville, AR; six grandchildren and nine great grandchildren. Betty was preceded in death by her parents; three brothers, Dr. Grover "Tim" Icenogle, Lester Icenogle and Dr. Richard Icenogle; three sisters, Lois Stull, Leona Greeson and Hazel Kirkaldie.
During Betty's high school years, she worked for her father at his grocery store, The Basket Grocery. She graduated from Mattoon High School in 1946. After attending Brown's Business College in Decatur, IL, she was employed as a secretary at A.J. Walker Construction Company in Mattoon. Betty then worked as a secretary/cashier at Coles Moultrie Electric Co-op in Mattoon. She completed an instructor's course at the Patricia Vance Charm School in Chicago and became an assistant instructor for the course at Utterback's Business College in Mattoon. Her last employment was as a part-time grocery clerk at Icenogle's Grocery in Mattoon. Betty's major employment was at home raising the five boys!
Betty was a 63 year member of the Mattoon First Baptist Church where she was a former trustee, a member of the Kupples Sunday School class, and a member of the Senior Joy Givers group. Betty was a dedicated participant in Bible study groups and enjoyed watching Billy Graham on television.
Betty faithfully attended her sons' activities, and she enjoyed traveling on the annual family summer vacation. She liked cooking and baking. Betty's specialties included her noodles, divinity, fudge, cookies, and red velvet cakes. She took great pleasure in decorating during the holiday seasons. Betty was a fan of the Lake Land College men's basketball team. In her later years she enjoyed doing the Jumble puzzle and playing dominos
