Henry Bartels was born at Horsten, #30, in the Schaumburg district of Niedersachsen (Lower Saxony), Germany. The farm number would indicate that he was not a property owner but worked for a farmer. He married Engel Marie Dorothea "Mary" Hahn on 18 Feb 1844 in the Godehardi Church in Beckendorf, Germany and they had 7 children. His second child, Hans Christoph ("Christ") was the first to come to America, arriving on August 29, 1865. His oldest, daughter Catharina, came to America on August 22, 1867. Next, his fourth and fifth children, Heinrich Christoph and Heinrich Conrad, immigrated to America, arriving on 6 Oct 1868; the Schaumburg Auswander (volumes of emigrants from Schaumburg, published as "Schaumburg Studies") shows their being released on June 10, 1868. The sons settled in Saline County, Nebraska and later sent for their parents and brothers Henry Jr and August, who arrived on January 17, 1871. They influenced their cousins Fred and Ernst to also join them from Illinois. Henry Sr. and Jr. and August were three of the founders of the Zion Lutheran Church south of Tobias, which stood next to this cemetery. His sons eventually left Saline county; Christ went to Gage County and ultimately to Kay County, Oklahoma; Henry Jr. went to nearby Jefferson county, Heinrich Christoph to Webster and then Franklin county, and August to Jerauld county South Dakota. Of the afore-mentioned cousins Fred and Ernst, Fred and his family stayed in Saline county and it is thought that Ernst went to South Dakota.
