Erma was born Erma Marcella McBride on February 27, 1919 in Plankinton, South Dakota, to Walter and Myrtle (Sauvage) McBride. Being the third of five sisters and one brother taught her early in life the importance of family, a lesson she would carry with her forever. While working for the state in Pierre in early 1945, she offered to chaperone her boss's daughter to the old Silver Spur in Ft. Pierre, it was there she met the love of her life, one William Bartels. The two were married November 1, 1945 and began their life together on a ranch south of Ft. Pierre. Their 62 year journey would take them from the ranch to Pierre, Keystone, Rapid City, Mandan, North Dakota, and Waco, Texas, before returning in 1980 to the state she loved so much and the place she would always call home Pierre, South Dakota.

Erma loved to embroidery, crochet, read, bake, and play cards, but her greatest love of all was her husband and family. She delighted in family reunions with all of her family and traveling to visit her brother and sisters and her grandchildren, as well as traveling with Bill in their RV. Most recently Erma resided at Maryhouse in Pierre and never failed to express her gratitude and love for the special care she received as a resident.

She is survived by her husband Bill, their three children, Janice Bartels of Pierre, Dan Bartels of Mandan, North Dakota, and Mike Bartels of Rapid City, four grandchildren, Jeff Wright of Denver, Jason Wright of Portland, Maine Andy and Margaret Bartels of Rapid City and one great grandchild, Rusty Wright of Portland Maine as well as youngest sister, Lou Ann Grady of Mukilteo, Washington, along with many nieces and nephews who loved their "Aunt Erma".

Her parents, Walter and Myrtle McBride, her sisters, Merle, Vivian, Mildred, Darlene and brother Dale, precede her in death.

Erma's famous attitude and life's lesson "if life gives you lemons, make lemonade" will live forever with all of those who loved her.
