Everett Leland Bartels was born Dec. 17, 1923 on the family farm south of Tobias, Neb., the second son of Otto J. and Lena Schwisow Bartels. He died Feb. 10, 2010 at the age of 86 years, 1 month and 24 days at Gardenside Long Term Care in Fairbury.
He was baptized into the faith in January of 1924 by Pastor E.O. Potratz at Zion Lutheran Church of Tobias. He attended Zion Lutheran Parochial School and was confirmed on April 10, 1938 by Pastor Wm. Nau.
He graduated from Tobias High School as solutatorian of the class of 1942. After graduation, he worked on the family farm. After World War II, he was employed at the Bruning Air Base and at Newell Iowa.
On Sept. 12, 1948, he was united in marriage to Iona Mae Kleine at St. John's Lutheran Church in Daykin, Nebraska by Pastor Herman C. Damm. The couple established their home on the Kleine family farm, west of Daykin. their union was blessed with three daughters. They were privileged to celebrate 61 years of marriage.
He was a life long member of Zion Lutheran Church and served the church faithfully on numerous boards and committees.
He loved the farm and loved to farm. He and his father-in-law, William Kleine were some of the first farmers in Jefferson County to incorporate crop irrigation into their farming practices. He retired from farming in 1993.
After suffering a stroke, Everett entered Gardenside Long Term Care Facility in Fairbury, Nebraska in October of 2000.
Survivors include his wife; daughters Judy and husband, Marlon Buzek of Stromsburg, Janet and Husband, Raymond Capek of Milligan, and Joy and husband, Scott Wolfe of Daykin; grandchildren and great-grandchildren, Heather and Eric Lindsley, Grant and Logan of Osceola, Chad and Stephanie Buzek and Tara Jo of Stromsburg, Jason and Stephanie Capek, Courtni, Chase and Carter of Gibbon, Justin and Melissa Capek and Jayden of Ohiowa, Jon and Audra Capek, Quinten and Stormi of Carleton, Joshua Capek of Tobias, Aaron and Cooper Wolfe and Megan and Derrick Haake and Maddox, all of Daykin; brother, Willard Bartels and wife, Judy of Tobias; sisters, Leona Klawitter and Donna Steingbrook, both of Tobias, and Dorothy Brandt of Western; sisters-in-law, Letha Bartels of Ohiowa and Patricia Bartels of Tobias; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; parents-in-law, William and Minnie Kleine; brothers Vernon and Gaylord Bartels and brother-in-law, Martin Klawitter, Wilmer Brandt and Lester Steinbrook.
Services were held Feb. 15, at Zion Lutheran Church as Tobias with the Rev. Ryan Meyer officiating. Music was provided by Janile Campell, Mrs. Robert Bartels and Becky Ellis. Pallbearers were Chad Buzek, Eric Lindsley, Jason Capek, Justin Capek, Jon Capek, Joshua Capek, Aaron Wolfe and Derrick Haake. Honorary pallbearers were Heather Lindsley and Megan Haake. Burial was in the Zion Lutheran church Cemetery. Memorials to family's choice. Gerdes-Meyer Funeral Home, Fairbury, service.
