Wife of Jacob, mother of Sylvia, Morton, and Arnold, grandmother of 11 Bermans and Wallaces.

Born in Shpola. Rose arrived in New York as Reisel Brodsky from Bremen on July 25, 1909 aboard the SS George Washington with parents Mina and Yeheil and four of her eight siblings. Her older brother Chaim/Herman had been the first to arrive three years before, in Baltimore, on February 1, 1906 at age 21 aboard the SS Frankfurt. Siblings Abe and sister Freda would follow a few years later, and they would all settle in Philadelphia.

Rose married grocer Jack Berman in December, 1915 when she was living at 1218 N. 7th St. Their

marriage certificate lists her birthdate as January 28, 1893 almost two years earlier than the Dec. 18, 1894

birthdate noted on her 1940 naturalization papers, but the family did celebrate her birthday in January, not December. And in 1944, Rose, age 45, was described as 5-foot-3, 135 lbs. with brown hair and blue eyes and a light complexion.

Rose never learned to read and write English properly, but she was an assertive, non-nonsense woman who was also quick to laughter, and renowned as a wonderful cook. Ah, those Bubby cookies!

(See photo included here of her handwritten recipe.)

Her most common expressions--still fondly recalled and repeated by her many grandchildren--were

"Dat's it!" and "Unbelievable, I tell you!
