John Patrick "Pat" Barnes was born July 2, 1941, in Columbia, Missouri, the son of Donnie and Rose (Heislen) Barnes. His father was a maintenance man.
From Humble beginnings, John began his career as a maintenance man for Holiday House Apartments in the 1960's. He worked his way up to become Vice President and part owner of Executive Affiliates. Executive Affiliates owns properties in twelve states and sixteen cities of which John was part owner of almost everyone.
John was also the city of Columbia's biggest landlords. Notable real estate projects in which John was involved include the Columbia Expo Center and the Holiday Inn Executive Center.
In 1973 to 1979, John served on the Columbia City Council as Representative of the 4th Ward. In 1964, John founded the Central Missouri Radio Squad which in 1970 became the Boone County Fire Protection District, one of the state's largest Volunteer Fire Department's one of twentyeight National Search and Rescue Task Force. John voluntered as the districts first assistant fire chief, until his death.
John, better known as "Pat" to his friends, family and longtime Boone County residents, a name that dominated the air-waves and news print in Columbia in 1986. He began to recede from the public eye about two decades ago but Columbia was never far from his mind.
At the time of his death he was a Vice-President of Executives Affiliates, a Big Rock, Illinois based real estate farm, a job that would take him all over the country.
John's friends stated that if you were down and out, Pat would give you money right out of his pocket. Dave Griggs, chairman of the Fire District, said "Pat" was one of the greatest pillars of the community and with his death Columbia has lost a great leader.
John and his wife collected exotic animals and motorists traveling past his South Rock Quarry Road might have seen Zebras and Camels.
John died suddenly at his home, of a heart attack, on February 11, 2011. He will be sadly missed and lovingly remembered by his family and his many friends.
