DICKENSON, JOHN W.:
Co. K, 64th. Virginia Mounted Infantry
Enlisted on 9/13/62 at Gray's Farm.
Deserted 4/30/63, returned to duty.
Taken POW 9/9/63 at Cumberland Gap. Sent to Camp Douglas 9/24/63 where held until he died of an abcess on 9/13/64. Previously served in Co. F, 29th VA Inf. B. ca. 1826 in Russell Co. Age 34, farmer, 1860 Wise Co. Census. He was 6'2", dark comp., grey eyes, and black hair.

John was originally buried at Chicago City Cemetery (now defunct)Plot:grave 3, block 2, When that Cemetery was closed due to citizens health concerns all burials were exhumed and reburied at other cemeteries in the city. Thousands of Confederate soldiers from the City Cemetery were buried in a mass grave at Oak Woods Cemetery, some time later a monument named Confederate Mound was built on top of the mass grave.

John Wesley Dickenson married Sarah "Sally" Gilley abt: 1847, Sarah Gilley from Lee Co. Virginia was born abt: 1830 and died 1894, They had 6 children:

William Henry 1853-1948
Martha Ann 1856-1925
Elkanah 1858-1961
George W. 1860-1861
John and Sarah spent most of their married life in Wise County Virginia
