Everyone called her, Aunt Jane…
She was the third daughter of James Patton McGhee and Martha Caledonia (Houk) Rucks.
She was born in Woodville, Alabama in the warm summer month of June. The family consisted of three sisters and four brothers living in a rustic hewn log cabin in the hills of Alabama.

Her father was in the Civil War as were several Rucks and Houk relatives.

Between 1880 and 1900 the family moved to Arkansas and her father was the sheriff of Winfrey Township, on Shepherd Mountain.

In 1910 the family moved to Maxey, Crawford Co., Arkansas and on the 1930 census residing in Mulberry, Arkansas.

Aunt Jane lived with her parents and was never married. She took care of a passel of kids and in later years took care of her aging parents.

She was well liked and compassionate. Her mother died in 1924 and her father in 1932. She then moved to California to live with her sister and brother-in-law, Carrie and Willie Jeffers near Bakersfield. She was a member of the Weedpatch Pentecostal church in the early days.

In her latter years she became blind. Aunt Jane had her luxuries in life though: In the late 1920's she had her own handmade feather mattress!
