Johan "John" was the son of Wynand and Dirkje "Dora" (Koster) Modders, born in The Netherlands. The family emigrated to Grand Rapids, Michigan, USA, in 1872.
In Michigan, he was married to Minna Wyma who was also born in The Netherlands. They had a son nameed after his grandfather, Wynand. Unfortunately, he died in 1889. Minna died in 1889 in Moddersville, Michigan, and John married her sister, Alice J. Wyma in Michigan.
John and Alice had eight children Wynand, Rena, William Nicholas, Martin, John, Benjamin and George.
John was the postmaster in Moddersville, and like his father before him, he owned and operated a general store.
He died in Moddersville, Michigan.
