John Davis married Jane Bolton in 1849. They had two children previous to his enlisting in the Union Army. During the war (1861-65), he was in several significant battles which greatly influenced the war's outcome. Among these were Shiloh and Vicksburg, during which battles he was wounded. He was with Grant from the beginning as a member of Illinois 41st Regiment. He also joined Sherman in his march to Savannah. Following the war, he returned to Illinois, lived briefly with his wife, Jane, and their two children. While living in Kansas, they separated. She and her children returned to Illinois and her family. He went west to the mining fields of Colorado and Montana. He married Minerva Tuller. They lived in Montana near and in Virginia City. They had four children. His biography in Joaquim Miller's "Illustrated History of Montana" attests to the respect he achieved during his life. (His biography can be read on the pages attached as photos at this memorial.) He was a leader of men, a patriot and a respected member of his community.
