The family moved to San Antonio, Texas the next year and to Corpus Christi, Texas in 1933, where Dawson remained for the rest of his life. He graduated from Corpus Christi Academy in 1944 and then spent three years on active duty in the United States Army. He returned to attend college at the University of Notre Dame, and graduated Magna Cum Laude in 1951. He was looked to for his knowledge and expertise by many during both the good and difficult times of their lives. He was an Eagle Scout and remained active in the scouting program for years as an adult. He has a son and a grandson who followed in his scouting footsteps to the rank of Eagle. Dawson was active in the Rotary Club, his church and the Knights for many years. Dawson was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 54 years, Mary Nell Liem Boone, a younger brother George, and his sister, Mary Nell Stockwell.

His surviving family members include Dan Boone and wife Jackie of Halletsville, Texas, Jim Boone and Joe Bucuzzo of Spokane, Washington, Michael Boone and wife, Pat of Falls of the Rough, Kentucky, David Boone and wife, Margaret of Dripping Springs, Texas and Peter Boone and wife, Mary Helen of Austin, Texas.
