Mr. Body was born in Manville, N.J. He joined the New York City Fire Department in 1958, attaining the rank of lieutenant. Until he was injured, he served for 20 years in various areas of the city, primarily on the East Side. Among many certificates of merit, Mr. Body received a special commendation for single-handedly saving the lives of a woman and her four children from a burning apartment. This took place during his off-duty hours.
