Leonard W. Hillbery, 88, Yakima, died Wednesday, April 28, 2010 at his home.
He was born May 11, 1921 to Wilbur and Clara Hillbery in Zillah, Washington. He graduated from Zillah High School in 1940 and went to Edison Vocational School after high school. He learned sheet metal fabrication and welding. Mr. Hillbery worked at Boeing and then at the Seattle / Tacoma Shipyards from1940 - 1943. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served in World War II from 1943 1945. He was in Iwo Jima at the end of the war, sailed to Japan and then to Hawaii.
He married Lorraine Anderson on June 14, 1947. Leonard worked at Valley Neon building signs for nineteen years then moved to Heath Northwest Sign Company where he stayed nineteen years until retirement in 1986. He spent thirty eight years in the sign business.
His hobbies and activities included hunting, fishing, golf, waterskiing, dancing at the Senior Center and travel.
Leonard was preceded in death by his wife, Lorraine, passing away December 3, 1993, a grandson, Brian Hillbery of Yakima and seven brothers and sisters.
Leonard is survived by two sons, Ken (LeAnn) Hillbery of Deer Park, WA and Steve (Pat) Hillbery of Yakima; and a daughter, Janis (Robin) Champoux of Bend, OR. He is also survived by seven grandchildren and three great grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. Tuesday, May 4, 2010 at the Keith & Keith Terrace Heights Chapel. Concluding services and entombment will follow at Terrace Heights Memorial Park Mausoleum with full military honors conducted by members of William Wharton Post #379 VFW and Washington State National Guard.
