The second child (of six) and the eldest son of William Wallace and Abigail (Clark) Johnson.
Served in the US Army during the Civil War (1862-1865); Co. A of 24th WI Infantry.
He became a teacher after the war.
Married Harriet Sophia Strong (1844-1915) on 3 June 1866 in Greenfield, Wisconsin. Son Alvan Elmer was born in 1867. In 1868, the family moved to Hart, Michigan and two more sons were born; Abner S. in 1869 and Arthur N. in 1872.
Alvan Johnson was killed tragically in March 1874 (just before 31st birthday) in a tree cutting accident.
Harriet Johnson didn't want to raise three young boys alone so left her sons to the care of her husband's parents.
