22 May 1967: George H. (Chick) Heverling Sr., a retired local painting contractor whose avocation was spreading cheer and bringing pleasure to others, died at 12:30 p.m. Saturday at his home, 44 Berwyn Park. He was 83. To several generations of Lebanon area residents, Heverling was affectionately known as an organ grinder, a role he assumed to bring a lift to the spirits and smiles to the faces of young and old. Heverling, attired in the costume of an organ grinder and with a toy monkey, regularly entertained at children's affairs, especially Christmas parties conducted by service and fraternal groups. He also participated in Halloween parades. Entertaining others was to Heverling a dedication that for others finds its outlet on the golf course or in other personal pleasures. Despite his advanced years, Heverling had been in relatively good health and he was active until Friday when he was stricken ill. His condition worsened until his death Saturday. A man who liked children, Heverling had eight of his own and to many more he was regarded as a second father. There are many adults in Lebanon who today recalled that when they were children Heverling would load his car with children on a Sunday and take them to ball game. "Doing things for others was what he was always doing," one local businessman said today by way of tribute. For many years Heverling was active in the operation of the Southeast Playground at Second and Walnut Streets. Until his retirement about three years ago he resided at 203 Walnut St. During his more active years he was an ardent hunter and fisherman. His nickname Chick reportedly stemmed from his boyhood chore of feeding chickens kept by his grandparents. He was a member of St. James Lutheran Church and he was a life member of the Lebanon Elks Lodge. He also held membership in the Royal Men's Club and the Weavertown Fire Company. Surviving are five sons, City Councilman George H. Jr., Robert, Donald, Richard and Frederick, and two daughters, Mary Jane, wife of Adam Wilder, and Doris, wife of David Miller, all of Lebanon. Also surviving are 13 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; two brothers, Harry and Martin, and a sister, Mrs. Jane Ulrich, all of Lebanon. A number of nieces and nephews also survive. His wife, the former Bertha Arnold, died in 1953. He was a son of the late Jonathan and Ida (Wagner) Heverling and he was born in Schuylkill County. [Lebanon Daily News]
