Birth: 1792
New London County
Connecticut, USA
Death: Jun. 17, 1871
Jackson County
Kansas, USA

Thankful Matilda was thought to have been the daughter of Joseph and Sabra (or Sabria) Baker Chapman, and her date of birth has been given as between 1892 and 1896. After her father's death, her mother was married to Nathan Latimer, who had several children. One of his sons was Lyndes, to whom Matilda was married about the year 1812. To this marriage were born eight children - four of them in Connecticut and four of them after they had moved to Franklin County Ohio: Francis Henry, Lyman Law, Sophia Ann, James Monroe, Sabria Matilda, Hannah Maria, Stephen Lee and Nancy Ellen, who died as a young girl.

Sometime around 1835, the family moved again - this time to Kosciusko County Indiana, where Lyndes passed away in 1846. He was buried at nearby Stoney Point Cemetery. When her son, Francis and his family moved to Illinois, Matilda went with them, and eventually on to Jackson County Kansas.

When Matilda passed from this life, she first was buried in the family plot on the Francis Latimer farm, but later she was moved to the new Holton Cemetery, to be buried beside a granddaughter, Janie. She was preceded in death by another daughter, Sophia Ann Sanders (or Saunders). Surviving were her six children: Francis, Lyman, James, Sabria, Hannah, and Stephen, and an unknown number of other relatives.
