Mattie Lee, daughter of Bird and Martha (Frogge-Smith, a widow) Keeton grew up in Barren County, KY. Her family, with several other families, went by wagon train to Texas about 1890, settling near Venus, Johnson County. It is thought that her mother had died before the move.
Mattie was married to James W. Rigney in Ellis County, TX on Nov. 13, 1893. They lived on a farm near Stephenville, Erath County, TX. After the birth of their first child in 1895, they moved to Washita County, OK, where they first lived on a farm east of Cordell. By 1911 they were living in Cordell, where Mattie helped support the family by serving noon meals to people who worked downtown.
The family had moved around in Washita County, and still Jim was not satisfied, so about 1915 they moved to Florida, lured by the hope of making it rich by growing citrus. Their last home was a citrus grove south of Groveland, Lake County, where they were living at the time of her death. She was laid to rest by her grieving family at Greenwood Cemetery.
Left to mourn her passing were her husband and four children: Elza, Pearl (Mrs. Kirk Latimer), Essie (Mrs. Sam Butler) and Harry and his wife, Kathleen, and several grandchildren. Two children, James Edgar and Jennie Mae, had died in early childhood. (These children are buried at Sod Cemetery, Washita Co., OK)
