Nellie Victoria Chapman was born to James Raymond and Clara Inice (Hart) Chapman at Creston, Union County, Iowa. As a young girl, the family moved west to Clay Center, Clay County, KS and still later to a farm near Stafford, Custer County, OK.
It was there she was married to Emerson Dorance Dunn on Aug. 29, 1900, in a double marriage ceremony with her brother, Avery, and Emerson's sister, Emma. They made their first home in a dugout on their claim in the newly opened Cheyenne-Arapaho lands. To this union were born seven children - four daughters and three sons, one son (Leo) dying at birth. Over the years they lived at various places in Custer, Washita and Beckham counties in Oklahoma.
Their last home together was in the town of Arapaho, and after his death in 1956 she moved to Clinton, Custer County, OK. The last few years of her life were at the Highland Park Manor Nursing Home, in Clinton, where she passed from this life. She was a devoted wife and mother, rearing her children under difficult conditions, a good cook and seamstress. She was a member of the Clinton church of Christ and her funeral service was held there, with interment at the Stafford Cemetery.
She left to mourn her passing, her children: Mrs. Thurston Snider (Gladys), Butler, Mrs. Homer Snider (Mable), of Buffalo, MO, Mrs. Guy Stocks (Nellie), and Mrs. Harry Goss (Viola), of Clinton, Leon (and his wife, Hazel), of Hillsboro, OR, and Walter (and his wife, Wenona), of Donna, TX; one brother, Dick Chapman, of Arapaho, 20 grandchildren, 53 great-grandchildren, 5 great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband in 1956, several sisters and brothers.
