Born in Saterbo, Arboga, Vastmanlands, Sweden, Charlie's birth name was Carl Johan.

His parents were:
Per Gustaf Ersson (born June 7, 1847 in Gotlunda, Vastmanlands, Sweden)
Hedvig Jansdotter (born April 7, 1849 in Gotlunda, Vastmanlands, Sweden)

His siblings were:

Charlie sailed from Gottenburg, Sweden on October 3, 1902. He landed in Hull, England and travelled by rail to Liverpool. He departed from Liverpool October 9, 1902 on the Dominion Line's New England, and arrived in Boston October 17, 1902.

Also sailing on that voyage of the New England were Beda Malvina Ramsberg Peterson, her infant son Roy Peterson, and her mother Anna Ramsberg. Beda was the wife of Charlie's oldest sibling, Carl August Peterson. The New England manifest stated that Charlie intended to stay with his brother, A. Peterson, who resided on West Street in Fitchburg, Massachusetts. The ship's manifest stated that Beda, Roy, and Anna were returning to their home in Massachusetts. Carl August and his family later moved to Saugus, Massachusetts.

Charlie resided in Illinois from November 8, 1904. Although he lived on the north side of Chicago, Charlie filed his naturalization papers in Sycamore, DeKalb County, Illinois.

Charlie married Martha Stichmann on July 15, 1914. Their son Roy was born October 14, 1915. Their daughter Pauline was born November 17, 1917. The brothers Carl August and Carl Johan both named their first child Roy.

Charlie owned retail seafood stores, primarily around Belmont and Halsted. He died in the store located at 3410 Sheffield Avenue.
