My great-great uncle went west to Yreka, CA to pan for gold after the tragic death of his first wife and baby. When the American Civil War broke out, he enlisted in a California regiment and returned east to fight for the Union. He was reassigned to a Massachusetts regiment and served as a mail courier in Washington, D.C. He was in Washington when Lincoln was assassinated and went to the Capital Rotunda to view the catafalque. He wrote extensive and informative letters home during this time, which were donated by the family to the Library of Congress. After the war he remarried to Sarah Amelia Hyde and operated a general store in Elba, MI.
