Edward Bernard was a veteran of the Civil War and was a captain in the 65th NY Infantry Co. I. He was wounded in the Battle of Malvern Hill, Virginia. He suffered a shot to the leg. After his injury he was placed on a hospital ship which traveled up the James River. He was then transported to Philadelphia, Pa and from there he was moved by train to NYC, where near death, was treated for his severely infected gun shot wound. Although after 8 months the doctors were able to save his leg, he had an open wound and limp for the remainder of his life.
