Williams Jennings Baker (1896-1948), school board member for the first district, well known merchant and lifelong resident of Satsuma, died suddenly Thursday morning from a heart attack at Evergreen, Ala., while en route home from a vacation trip, on which he was accompanied by Mrs. Baker. The news of his passing came as a distinct shock and surprise to his many friends, as he was deemed in his usual robust health.
Mr. Baker, age 52, was a native of Satsuma, his parents having been the late Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Franklin Baker, pioneer resident of that section. For many years he engaged in lumbering, stock-raising and farming, and in late years had taken over and operated the former big star at Satsuma, where he was also railway express agent. he served in World War I, and was a member of the local American Legion Post and the Palatka Lodge of Elks. For several terms he had been the Fruitland Peninsular member of the County Board of Public Instruction, and had served as chairman of the same.
Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Bessie Genevieve Waller Baker; one son Thomas Frederick Baker; four daughters, Mrs. Mary brooks, Miss Caroline Baker, Miss Betty Baker and Miss Billy Ann Baker; two brothers, Peter Ralph, and Walter Blaine Baker and three grandchildren, three sister, Mrs. Byron Cornwall of Jacksonville, Mrs. Robert Wilson of Savannah, and Mrs. Hiram Bird of DeLand.
Funeral services and burial were held Sunday afternoon at Satsuma, with Rev. G.E. McCauley, of the Palatka Heights Baptist Church, officiating. The America Legion took charge of the graveside. Legionnaires also served as pallbearers. W. Carl Davis and son directed the arrangements
