This is my uncle Bill; one of my father's brothers. Bill and my father both left rural North Carolina in the mid 1930s to seek their fortunes in the west. My father (Find A Grave Memorial# 52402598) went to work for Conrad Hilton in the hotel business, and though I don't know where Bill worked, they may have worked in similar fields. Soon after the American entry into WWII, both of them signed up for service, though both were a bit older than most who volunteered. My father went into the Navy, while I beleive Bill went into the Army Air Corps (US Air Force Reserve) and earned the rank of Captain. After the war, they went back to their respective careers. I know that they stayed in touch, and probably both lived in the Los Angeles area. When my father died, I was 4 years old, and my uncle Bill was close at hand. My Uncle Bill bought me my first bicycle (with training wheels) when I was just five years old. Several years later, after my mother and I had moved to the Washington DC area, Uncle Bill stopped in at National Airport and we had a nice lunch with him... a very special day! The last time I saw my uncle Bill was just a week or so before his death. He had come back to Drum's Crossroads, in North Carolina, to see his family while being treated for cancer. A couple of days before I had to leave, his mind cleared from the drugs he was having to take, and we sat at a small kitchen table and just talked. It was a good day for both of us.
Thank you, Uncle Bill.
