After his two small children, a baby boy and two year old daughter Adie died, Clarence left Minnesota sometime before or after 1877 and was residing Washington state by 1880, by census records he was ill.
Clarence filed for divorce in Wasco county Oregon that same year, his remaining children, Frank, Grace and Clarence Jr. were living with his parents at that time, son Wesley remained with his mother.
Harriet A. remarried and the children were back with her by 1885.

Clarence's health as noted on the 1880 census was Ague,
The definition of Ague is: a fever (as malaria) marked by paroxysms of chills, fever, and sweating that recur at regular intervals, a fit of shivering, chill.
