Lizzie carried a difficult burden for years, she had told everyone, her friends, family and children that her husband Mike Campbell had died, when in fact he was very much alive and died two years after she died.

She was divorced and didn't want anyone to know, she told everyone, even her parents that Mike was dead and so the story was carried on for years after her death. I found it very odd that a young pretty women didn't remarry, so I did some checking and found Mike. This was not an easy task tracing him with his family in Pennsylvania and finding the "dead" man and bringing him back to life.It took this writer two years of hard research, death certificates and miles of microfiche to end the mystery of Mike!

Mike worked in the hop fields of Northern California, he would come home to visit every so often. Maybe the strain of being apart and raising the children on her own was too much. They parted ways before 1910 and Mike listed himself as widowed in the 1910 census, however by the 1920 census he listed himself as divorced.
Lizzie always listed herself widowed. She kept the story going until her death. Her daughter Minnie even told people all she wanted was a marriage as happy as her mothers.
Every time Mike came home from his work in the Northern part of California , Lizzie would end up having a baby, maybe she tired of this after having four children and no one around to assist her in raising them. The third child born was a boy, Robert Lee in 1902, he died in 1918 without ever knowing his father,he is buried in Southerlin, OR by his Uncle Frank Montgomery. In all Lizzie's photos she looked very unhappy, not one photo shows her with a smile.
What a sad life she must of had.
