Gilbert was born in Augusta, Texas to Willie Curvey and Winnie Bonner Curvey.
He attended W.R. Banks In Grapeland, Texas and later Flint Hill High School in Neches, Texas He also attended Texas Southern University, Prairie View A & M University and University of Houston.
He served in the United States Army from 1948-1950 and was honorably discharged.
He married Euraline Lane, July 23, 1977 and to this union no children were born.
He joined Brewington Baptist Church in Augusta, Texas at a early age under the leadership of the late Rev. Arthur Ealy. Upon moving to Houston, Texas joined Sunnyside Baptist Church under the leadership of Pastor E. R. Curvey. He later joined Mt. Hebron Missionary Baptist Church under the leadership of Pastor J.J. Robertson-he remained there until death. He was very active in the church serving in many areas of the church and related church organizations such as the Independent Missionary Baptist General Association of Texas. He was a member of the Palm Terrace Civic Club and the Veterans of Foreign Wars.
During his working years he was employed at Jefferson Davis Hospital; Building Contractor; Texas Licensed Relator and Owner of G.V. Curvey Remolding; Manager of Mt. Hebron Village Apartments.
He is survived by his wife; one son Dwight Clewis; one step-daughter; two grand children; one great grand son; one sister Olevia Hortense Griffieth.
