Elizabeth was the third of nine born to James Grier and Fannie Patterson. The Grier home in Aughnish, County Donegal, is still in the family.
She was adventurous, a very independent person, sailing back and forth on her own between Ireland and Montreal at least three times before marrying widower Jim Barriskill and settling in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan.
Before her marriage Elizabeth lived with her Patterson cousins in Montreal where she worked as a stenographer. Her mother and the late John Patterson were sister and brother.
As a married couple Jim and Elizabeth continued their travels, visiting family in County Donegal and County Armagh each decade. About 1930 they moved to Victoria, British Columbia, joining four Griers and a niece of Jim's who had emigrated from Ireland.
