"Jim", the second child of John and Mary (Dillon) Lippincott, walked from near Cashtown, PA over the hills to join the Union Army in Chambersburg in September of 1861. He was only 15 and a half years old when he mustered in on October 9, 1861, but was enrolled as a Private nevertheless. He served in both Cos. A & F, of the 77th Infantry Regiment, Pennsylvania Volunteers. They saw action the second day at Shiloh, Tennessee and James was captured by Gen Bragg's Confederates at the battle of Stone's River, on Dec. 31, 1862. He spent 3 months in confinement by the Rebels in Richmond before being paroled and returning to his Regiment. He was with his regiment at Chickamaugua, the battle for Atlanta and at Franklin. They were mustered out on December 6th, 1865 at Victoria, TX.

Jim returned to Pennsylvania where he wed Jane Vance. They had nine children - John David L., Mary Catherine L.(married George Wolverton), Joseph Henderson L., Mertle Lousette L.(dy), James William L., Charles Rush L., Abigail Jane L. (m. Isaac Buck), Ethel Alma L. (m. Chris Peterson) and Kimber Augustus L.

James married twice after the death of Jane in March of 1911. He married Lillian A. Joy (widow of James L. Kerr) on Sept 11, 1911 in Kearney, NE but she passed away in 1915. James then married Jennie Doyle (div from James K. Doyle) on Nov 17, 1915 in Kissimmee, Florida. James passed away at thir home in Independence, Missouri.
