Doran was born in Virginia, Minnesota to Arthur and Eleanora Koste. He was the first born of a close-knit and extended family of Finnish descent. As the eldest of his siblings and cousins he provided a positive role model and always remained close to his roots. Growing up, Doran continued being the first in the family to do many things – getting his first car at 13, graduating high school as Valedictorian in 1957, and graduating from the University of Minnesota with an aeronautical degree.
He was the first in the family to leave the Iron Range and move far across the country in 1963 to begin a career at The Boeing Company that lasted for 32 years.
Doran loved to hunt, and fishing was his lifetime passion -- probably more for the chance to be close to nature and God, and contemplate the world than to actually shoot or catch anything -- or to make sure his young son, a nephew, or grandson would catch the "first" fish.
He indulged his wife and learned to ski and later took up golf. While he never mastered the game, he loved the social aspects of being with friends on a beautiful course. Doran also loved to travel and, unlike most men, would stop at every marker or turn off on the road to learn something or see something new. Doran and Marsha were engaged in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico and married in Kauai, Hawaii and these have always been very special places for them.
Doran had been wanting to go to Finland for years and was able to do so with his son David in September of this year. Meeting new relatives, seeing where his grandfather Koste was born and great-grandfather Koste homesteaded, only increased his thirst to learn more. Doran was hoping to return and delve more deeply into his family genealogy and share his Finland experience with the rest of his family..
The foremost "first" in Doran's life was his family and he never stopped putting those he loved ahead of all else – from parents, siblings, wife, son, cousins, nieces, nephews, friends - to his latest pride and joy, grandson Haakon. Doran promised his father that he would always take care of his mother and he was able to fulfill that promise with love and devotion (enjoying their daily talks) until her death in November 2007.
Being diagnosed with lung cancer in 2004 made every day even more special. Doran battled his disease with tenacity – engineering and managing his treatment and care through every bump in the road -- while always looking ahead to the next adventure or project on his long, long list of things yet to do, one of the latest being to build a Finnish sauna.
So many things left undone – so many wonderful memories to cherish always.
Doran is survived by his loving family – wife Marsha Vallier (Koste), son David Koste, daughter-in-law Dawn Koste, grandson Haakon Koste, brother Earl Koste, sister Louise Koste Susnik, uncle Laurie Lehtinen, aunt Angeline Lehtinen, and many cousins, nephews and nieces that were very special to him.
Our rock and forever our hero.
