Birth: Sep. 8, 1915
Snyder
Scurry County
Texas, USA
Death: Nov. 24, 2004

Lena Barnett went to be with her Lord Nov. 24, 2004.She was born in Snyder,
Texas, on Sept. 8, 1915. She was one of the last remaining High Desert
pioneers. She moved her family to Lucerne Valley after her husband, Bill
Barnett, found work in Victorville at the Army Air Base, later known as
George Air Force Base, in 1942. "I took one look Victorville and decided
that I didn't want to live down in a hole," said Lena during a recent
family history session. The town of Victorville at that time was centered
around the railway station on D Street. Lena raised her children and
flowers. Many people still drive by her home to see her flowers bloom
year-round. A member of the Lucerne Valley First Baptist Church for many
years, she taught Sunday School and picked up as many children along the
way as would fit in her car, going back out for two or three more loads.
Lena worked as a riveter building aircraft at George Air Force Base, then,
to be closer to her children, she was a waitress in many of the original
Lucerne Valley cafes and restaurants. The Old C Bar H Guest Ranch was also
a place of employment. She worked in Regenesberg's Leo's Market and then
was employed by the Lucerne Valley School District for 13 years as a bus
driver/custodian/gardener. She retired in 1980. Many Lucerne Valley adults
still remember riding Mrs. Barnett's bus No. 8, including her own
granddaughters. "I remember as we pulled out of the school," Lena's
granddaughter, Emmalena Dennis, said. "All the other buses had radios
blaring and kids screaming, but not grandma's bus." According to Dennis,
everyone knew that Mrs. Barnett would not put up with rowdy kids. If a
student misbehaved, Lena would stop the bus in front of the childŐs house
and march him or her up to the front door, where she would personally
inform the child's parent of the misbehavior. Because this event was staged
in front of the entire bus, full of children, it had a large impact on both
the offender and future offenders." She told me once that her goal was to
get as many of the children on her bus (as she could) to go to Sunday
School and church with her," granddaughter Ilene Walton said. Her husband
of 50 years, John William 'Bill' Barnett, and son, John Barnett, preceded
her in death. Her son, Harold Barnett and Barbara Veale, still live in
Lucerne Valley. Her son, Charles Barnett, lives in Victorville. She has 13
grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren, 25 of whom still live in the High
Desert. "She had a complete, unconditional love for everyone,"
daughter-in-law Deana Veale said. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday
at Calvary Bible Church, 10099 Crystal Creek Road in Lucerne Valley.
Interment will follow at Lucerne Valley Memorial Park at 32533 Highway 18.
