Dr. Joseph A. Applewhite
Dr. Joseph A. Applewhite, 85, a physician in Portland for more than 50 years, died Monday night at Good Samaritan Hospital, where he served his internship half a century ago. His funeral will be at 11:30 a.m., Thursday, at Finley's Morninglight chapel, with vault entombment at Lincoln Memorial Park. He was born in Winona, Miss., Nov. 22, 1874, and spent his early life in that state. He was graduated from Millsaps College in Jackson, Miss., with a master's degree. To prepare for business life, he entered Gallaudet College for the Deaf, in Washington, D.C., and later accepted a teaching position in the Deaf and Dumb School in Vancouver, Wash. He borrowed $100 to get to Vancouver. After teaching for a while, he entered University of Oregon Medical School and was graduated with honors, having completed the four year course in three years. He did post-graduate work in medicine in New York City, and served his internship at Good Samaritan Hospital. Surviving are his widow, formerly Lucia Gillespie, whom he married in Portland in 1906, and three sisters in Mississippi.
