Mary Landis was the daughter of the late Arthur C. and Bertha (Rippman) Landis of Newport. She grew up in Germany and returned to Newport in 1933. She graduated from Smith College in 1937. Mary worked for Armstrong Cork and Linoleum in Lancaster following college for several years and then returned to Newport.

She was very active in the Newport community. She was a driving force in establishing the Newport Library and was librarian for many years. She worked to get Head Start program in place. Her memberships include Council of the Arts to whom she gave a large house and money to create a civic center for Newport to have concerts and show art works and such. She was Past President of Newport Civic Club, Newport Women's Club, Historical Society, and co-founder of a Book Club. She was also a member of the Harrisburg Bridge Club, was founding member of Perry County Community Foundation, Garden Club, Board Member of the Louise Bead Memorial, Volunteer of the Year for Perry Valley Grange, President of the Central Pa. Chapter of Smith College Alumni, member and former vestry member of the Nativity Episcopal Church, Newport. She was a beloved member of the community and is sorely missed.

Mary outlived her parents and four sibings, but left behind seven nephews and three nieces who all loved her very much, as well as scores of grandnieces and grandnephews and great grandnieces and great grandnephews. Godspeed, Mary.
