FORT MEADE - Mr. Guy Bass, Retired Captain, Polk County Sheriff's Office, 69, passed away Thursday, June 11, 2009 at his home in Fort Meade due to cancer.
Mr. Bass was born in Milton, Florida on March 22, 1940 and was a lifelong resident of Fort Meade. Mr. Bass was a U.S. Navy Vietnam War veteran, serving from 1958-1973, retiring as a 1st Class Petty Officer. Mr. Bass was also a retired Captain with the Polk County Sheriff's Office. Beginning his career with the Polk County Sheriff's Office in 1973, he was hired as a Corrections Officer and then was promoted to Captain in 1988. His career with the PCSO included: serving as a Reserve III Detention Lieutenant, being the first Detention reservist of the PCSO; promoting and serving as Sergeant in Detention and Lieutenant in Detention at the Main Jail and then the Annex; promoting and serving as Captain in Detention at the Central County Jail and South County Jail; Created and ran the Tent City located inside of the Central County Jail Compound; trained as an Emergency Medical Technician and Breathalyzer Operator; From 1998-2007 Captain Bass was a Certified Inspector of the Florida Model Jail Standards County Jail Inspection Team. During that time he inspected jails comprised of Manatee, Osceola, Orange, Sarasota, St. Lucie and Volusia Counties.
Mr. Bass was a Protestant, and he was preceded in death by his sister, Jean Wingland. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Sandra M. Bass, Fort Meade; sons, Guy Francis Bass, Fort Meade, FL, Carl N. Bass, Lakeland, FL, Dave C. Bass, Bartow, FL; brothers, Roy Bass, Bartow, FL and David Bass, Fort Meade, FL; sisters, Annette Pierce, Fort Meade, FL, Helen Raines and Doris Dyal, both of Arcadia, FL; 13 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be held 6:00-8:00pm, Sunday, June 14, 2009 at Hancock Funeral Home, Fort Meade. Funeral services will be held 2:00pm, Monday, June 15, 2009 at the First United Methodist Church, Fort Meade with the Rev. Bill Ivey, Rev. Marvin Pittman and Rev. Christopher Custead officiating. Interment will follow in Evergreen Cemetery, Fort Meade.
