some suggestions that would help eliminate much of the false writing about him on the web
(i.e., he was a Episcopal priest, he was a Presybterian, etc.). First, the following
short bio:
John Bishop, born and baptized at Cattistock, May 3, 1610 (7th son of William and Alice)
received his B. A. degree at age 20 from Balliol College, Oxford, and his M.A. degree
Apr. 15, 1635. As a young man, he decided to migrate to New England and settled at
Taunton, Massachusetts where he was a schoolmaster in 1640. He went to Stamford,
Connecticut in 1644 to serve as the 2nd minister of the First Congregational Church. He
married 1) Rebecca Goodyear at Stamford circa 1645, the mother of all his children, who
died at Stamford in 1671. Following Rebecca's death, he married 2) Joanna Boyes, the
former widow of Rev. Peter Prudden of Milford, Conn. and Capt. Thomas Willett of Swansea,
Mass. Joanna died at Stamford in early 1683.
Rev. Bishop served the First Congregational Church of Stamford for fifty years through
many difficult and trying times in the Colonies. He died in 1694 at the age of 84, a much
respected and beloved clergyman. In his will dated Novemeber 16, 1694, proved March 12,
1694/5, he requested to be buried between his two wives Rebecca and Joanna, who he said
with confortable assurance are fallen asleep in Jesus and gone to Heaven before me.
Where Rev. Bishop and his two wives were first interred is unknown. His existing memorial
stone photographed here and located at Stamford's Saint Johns and Saint Andrews Episcopal
Cemetery was erected as a memorial more than 150 years after his death by some of his
descendants who where then members of the Episcopal Church.
