BENSON S PHILBRICK: Hoquiam; 83, A Hoquiam pioneer & one of the Harbor's top oldtime fish-erman died last night in a local rest home after a brief illness. MrPhilbrick, resident of Hoquiam for the past 71yrs, was noted as an expert fisherman & enthusiastic baseball player. He was a member of the DiamondS team, the first semi-pro baseball team organized in Hoquiam. During his active years, he was prominent along the Harbor waterfront & aided in organi-zing the Longshoreman's union here in which he served as treasurer. He had been widely acclaimed on the harbor for his fishing prow-ess & was considered an expert in the days of sailboat fishing before the advent of the pow-er boat. He retired from the business 25yrs ago. Several years ago, after his retirement, a group of University of Washington fisheries authorities requested his assistance in a study they were conducting at the time. His brother, Ralph was twice Mayor of Hoquiam & postmas-ter of the city. He served in 1918-20 & from 1939 to his death in Jan 1945.
MrPhilbrick & his wife Margaret, who died in 1939 were married in Hoquiam. He was born in Wausau WI & came to Hoquiam at the age of 12. At the time of death he made his residence with his son-Lewis. Surviving besides his son Lewis are a dau: Mrs Henry Morris-Sumner; 2 other sons: Albert-Hoquiam, Earl-SanLorenzo CA; 6 grandchildren & a bro: Edward-Olympia. Funeral services will be Friday at the Coleman chapel with the RevMax Christian officiating. Interment will follow in the family plot at Sunset Memorial Park.
