"Edgar Balthrope Dies at North Biloxi"

"Edgar S. Balthrope, 65, native of Saverton, Ralls County, Mo., and resident of Biloxi since he was 16 years old, died at 6 p.m. yesterday afternoon at his home in North Biloxi after an illness of about three years, which has been serious for the past five weeks. Mr. Balthrope engaged in the retail grocery, lumber and nursery business and in recent years he was a sales agent for wholesale grocery concerns. He was first in the retail grocery field, operating a store where the O. T. White Hardware Co. is now located. He disposed of his interest in the grocery store and entered the lumber business in 1806 at Vestry. He later entered the nursery businss for three years. For 13 years he was connected with wholesale grocery houses, but for the past six years he has been retired. In former years when the late Edward Glennan was mayor Biloxi Mr. Balthrope served as an alderman. He formerly was a member of the city and county school board. He formerly was active in the Woodmen of the World, Elks and member of all Yorkrite bodies. Mr. Balthrope was particularly active in the affairs of the First Baptist Church of Biloxi and was a member of the building committee for the old church, Lameuse and Washing Streets, and the new church on Howard Avenue. He had been a deacon of the church for many years and was teacher of one of the Sunday school classes. Mr. Balthrope leaves his wife, Rosa A. Sherrouse Balthrope, two children, Edgar C., who is in the retail feed business in Biloxi, and Charles W. Balthrope, who is commercial manager for radio station KTSA, San Antonio, Tex.; two brothers, Harvey, Whiting, Kans., and William of Atchinson, Kans., and one grandchild. The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday from the home and at the Baptist Church with services by Rev. G. C. Hodge and burial will be in Biloxi."
