Washington, Past and Present: A History
New York: Lewis Historical Pub. Co., 1930-1932.
Columbus Alexander. Member of the old and honored Virginia branch of the family, Columbus Alexander was descended directly from William Alexander, Earl of Stirling. At one time the family owned the land upon which the city of Alexandria is built, as well as the land which is now Arlington Cemetery, disposed of to the Government. These lands were acquired by the Alexanders through grant from King George of England. The Virginia branch of the family has been in contact with Washington from its very beginning and of all who attained to celebrity within the nation's capital none was worthier of note than Columbus Alexander, who opened the first printing office in the city. In this connection it is interesting to note that _____ Proctor, father of the editor-in-chief of this contemporary history, served his apprenticeship in the Alexander office.

Columbus Alexander was born September 15, 1815, son of Walter O. and Emily (Dade) Alexander. At the age of fourteen he started to work in a printing office, at Baltimore, Maryland, later coming to Washington to go into business for himself. Through industry, wise direction, conservation of resources and honest dealing he built up a fortune. He invested largely in the real estate of the District of Columbia and was ever to the fore in movements for the advancement of District and community welfare. On August 10, 1867, he was a juryman at the trial of Mrs., Surratt, before Judge Fisher. An attempt was made to discredit him as one of the Memorialists of inciting the blowing of a safe in the office of the Assistant District Attorney, Richard Harrington, to obtain papers damaging to officials of the District, relating to a pool in real estate. This he defeated readily enough and added to his notable career for his opposition to Sheppard. The fight which he led against Sheppard is brought to mind with interest to the present day. In all relations of life, both in public and private capacities, Mr. Alexander was accorded the respect and confidence of the people. He was a wise and judicious counselor.

Columbus Alexander married Rebecca Hay, daughter of Henry Hay, of Boston and of this union were born six children: 1. Catherine, who married James Francis Russell. Mr. and Mrs. Russell are the parents of three children: Louise R., wife of Lester Hayward, of Los Angeles, who now makes her residence in Washington; Katharine, wife of John Weisiger, of Richmond, Virginia; Eva, wife of Harry V. Bouic, son of State Senator Bouic, of Maryland. 2. Columbus S. 3. Walter O., a physician. 4. Fendall E., who became a great lawyer. 5. Henry H., who was one of the first government employees in Washington, an expert court stenographer, who recorded the trial proceedings from first to last after the assassination of President Garfield. 6. Douglass B.

Columbus Alexander died in Washington, February 14, 1898.
