Thomas Jefferson Cheves was the son of Isaac Green Cheves and Ann Elizabeth McCowen. He married Elizabeth H. Maynard about 1857.

They had three children that grew to adulthood:

1) Isaac Xenphon Cheves, b. 1861.
2) Wallace Robert Cheves, b. 1866.
3) William Theodore Cheves, b. 1871.

four additionbal children died as infants and were buried on the family home place in Monroe County.
