From East Oregonian Aug. 19, 2009

Former Pendleton resident Alice Bellomo, 90, died Saturday, Aug. 15, 2009, of Alzheimer's Disease at Avamere at Sandy Assisted Living in Sandy, where she resided for the past five years. Services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, Aug. 21 at Burns Mortuary in Pendleton. A gathering will follow at the Eagles Lodge.

Helena Alice Simpson was born Nov. 20, 1918, on the family homestead at Spray to Cass Andrew Simpson and Helen Parman Simpson. Both were from pioneering families who came to Oregon by wagon train in the 1800s. She attended high school in Condon, where she boarded with a family in order to attend school.

Following high school, she moved to Portland to attend beauty college, then started her own beauty shop in Milwaukie. In 1942 she married Ray Baker, who was also from Condon but who was working in the shipyards during World War II. They started their family while living in Milwaukie. At the end of the war, they moved to Pendleton and started a construction trade business. Their youngest daughter was born in 1949, about the same time Ray was diagnosed with Lou Gehrig's Disease; he died in 1950.

Following his death, she opened a beauty shop in her home with financial assistance from the First Christian Church in Pendleton. She also joined the Eagles Auxiliary, where she met Andy Bellomo, a member of the Eagles. They were married in 1962 after a 12-year courtship and engagement.

Mrs. Bellomo is survived by children Dennis Baker of Boardman, Nancy Baker Hoffman of Sandy and Brenda Baker Gardner of Apache Junction, Ariz.; five grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband Andy in 2002; and four brothers and three sisters.

Memorial contributions may be made to the First Christian Church in Pendleton.

Burns Mortuary of Pendleton is in charge of arrangements.
