Lucy was the eldest of 8 children born in Michigan to Ephraim Butterfield and Phebe Johnson, at least 8 that survived.
Lucy was married first to William H. Craver who died during the Civil War. There are actually two MI marriage records for them, the first 23 Nov 1862 in Van Buren County, Michigan and the second almost a year later 27 Nov 1863 in Van Buren Twp., Daviess County, Indiana. They had one daughter Lottie C. Craver.
Lucy married James Madison Chamberlain, known as Mattus, 28 July 1866 in Paw Paw, Van Buren Co., Michigan. It is believed that James knew William Craver during the Civil War and might have struck a pact to care for each others families in the event of their death.
She and James were the parents of Fred E., Frank Issac, Mason Irwin, Margaret Elva Chamberlin Roberts and Goldie Olive Phoebe Chamberlin Meek. The eldest, Fred, was born in Van Buren County, probably Waverly Twp., Michigan, where they were living. The next two children,Frank and Mason were born near Staceyville, Mitchell County, Iowa. And the last two, Mattie and Goldie were born Le Roy, Mower County, Minnesota, close to where James and Lucy would live out their lives.
James and Lucy owned and operated 'The Taopi House', the local lodging in Taopi for several years. Lucy died in Taopi in 1914 and is buried there. James died in West Concord, Dodge, MN 28 Dec 1920 and was brought 'home' to rest next to his Lucy.
